Extended Description
The Sir Halley Stewart Trust was established in 1924 by Sir Halley Stewart with a capital sum and over subsequent years, guidelines have been established governing the awards. Continuity with the Founder is maintained by Trustees drawn from the Stewart family. Other Trustees provide expertise in special areas of interest.
The Trust aims to promote a just environment and international goodwill by supporting individuals who are undertaking innovative and groundbreaking research in the fields of medical, social, educational and religious projects mainly within the UK.
The Trust follows Christian values and therefore has a main focus on projects aim on the prevention, rather than the alleviation, of human suffering.
The Trust welcome proposals for projects in the UK which attempt to:
- prevent and resolve conflict, promote reconciliation, and/or encourage re-connection between family members
- help people to ‘move beyond disadvantage’
- help people who may be vulnerable and/or have been exploited, particularly the elderly
Such projects might be concerned with the family and social aspects of:
- unemployment,
- crime,
- imprisonment,
- homelessness,
- migration,
- mental health problems.
Eligibility Criteria
Applications for funding are welcome from:
- Applicants researching in one of the Trust’s key areas of interest.
- Preferably early career researchers although any funding will be considered.
Applications should be submitted by those directly involved in the work.
Value Notes
The total grant budget per year is £800,000 with no upper or lower limit of grant offered.
Grants are normally given in the form of a salary over a period of two to three years, although sometimes a contribution towards the expenses of a project is given.
Small one-off grants (up to £5000) are sometimes given to projects falling within the Trust’s current priority areas. These grants are awarded throughout the year.
Grants are only paid to or through registered UK charities.
Restrictions
Grants are never made for the following:
- Donations to general appeals of any kind.
- The purchase, erection or conversion of buildings.
- Capital costs.
- University overhead charges.
- The completion of a project initiated by other bodies.
Grants are not usually made for:
- Projects put forward indirectly through other ‘umbrella’ or large charities.
- Personal education fees or fees for taught courses – unless connected with research which falls within current priority areas. The Trustees do not favour grant-giving to enable the completion of a project or PhD initiated by other bodies.
- Educational or gap year projects for young people.
- Running costs of established organisations or conferences.
- Climate change issues.
Terms and Conditions
If a grant is awarded, the following conditions will apply:
- The Trust encourages researchers to publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals, and/or with independent book/monograph publishers that use peer review.
- Annual progress reports and final evaluation reports are required within six months of the completion of grant funding.
- Ethics committee approval must be obtained for medical and social research, where appropriate, before any agreed funding can commence.
