An avian expert from the University of Lincoln is advising filmmakers on a new Easter-themed documentary series where viewers can see the eggs of various species hatch live on air.

Dr Charles Deeming, from the School of Life Sciences, was called in to ensure filming for ‘Easter Eggs Live’ does not have a detrimental impact on the safety of the birds or their offspring.

Mark Evans, Jimmy Doherty and amphibian enthusiast Lucy Cooke will front the series of programmes starting on 25 March with six, three minute live programmes being broadcast daily on Channel 4 at 7.55pm.

Two 60-minute documentaries will then be shown on Easter Sunday, 31 March and Easter Monday, 1 April.

The programmes will feature a mixture of home-grown and exotic eggs, which may include crocodiles, cockroaches, fish, frogs, turtles, termites and sharks.

Powerful scanners and super-sensitive microphones will be used to provide an insight of how animals break into the world. And for the first time viewers will be able to listen to eggs for sounds and vibrations.

Dr Deeming, whose research has previously featured on Springwatch, said: “Given the highly technical nature of this programme, I advised the producers on what would be feasible to produce the best television programme. I also suggested that recording the sounds coming from eggs during hatching would produce some novel observations that would be of great scientific interest.”
