Dr Terence Karran, Senior Academic at the Centre for Educational Research and Development at the University of Lincoln, will lead a Higher Education Academy lecture on whether academic freedom is an extravagant luxury or an essential liberty.
The event will take place in York on Tuesday 12th February and it is free to attend, and is also available for people to join via live-streaming.
As the HEA’s next research seminar, it will include an examination of the historical roots of academic freedom, its role within the modern research university and the need for a working definition of ‘academic freedom.’
Dr Karran will also argue for the importance of academic freedom in relation to students, university staff, institutions, and the wider world.
The seminar takes place at the Higher Education Academy in York.
