The Joseph Rowntree Foundation is has issued an invitation for applications under its poverty and ethnicity – caring and earning call.

Funding of up to £60,000 is available for research that aims to explore the changing ways people in different ethnic groups are balancing their caring and economic needs and the implications of this for the future development of informal and formal care services, the labour market, and the future of family and community life. The project should be completed within seven months and must be completed by the end of March 2013.

The overall aims of this research are to:

• explore the diversity experience and attitudes around balancing work and care of children, older people and other adults within different ethnic groups;

• develop understanding of how attitudes, preferences and capabilities of families across a range of ethnic groups are evolving to meet their caring and earning goals;

• examine the implications of how families are managing caring and earning for current and future patterns of poverty;

• explore issues relating to supply and provision of support and information about formal and informal care services;

• gain an understanding of the impact of the context of local labour market opportunities on the choices people make about work and care.
