The University Research Office has launched a scheme which aims to provide assistance to research active staff who would like to apply for external research funding but would benefit from additional assistance with literature searches, preliminary/pilot experimental work.
The BEING scheme provides support to research active members of staff to employ a Post-Graduate Research Assistant (PGRA), to assist on a specific project activity that will lead, directly or indirectly, to a bid for external research grant income. The purpose of the scheme is to allow the PGRA to acquire experience in research skills and benefit from playing a genuine role in academic enterprise. The scheme may, for example, involve the PGRA preparing the literature review for a grant proposal, or undertaking preliminary pilot or experimental work which will lead to a clearly identified grant proposal. The grant proposal should be produced either during the period of the internship, or immediately following it with the outputs of the internship feeding directly into the proposal. Where possible, the PGRA should be allowed to benefit by contributing to the editing or critiquing of the proposal.
The PGRA may be a Masters or PhD student, but should be a registered student of the University of Lincoln when applying for and during the internship.
The scheme provides primarily for a bursary of £2,000. A small amount may be requested to support unavoidable additional costs (e.g. PGRA travelling costs if the research involves visiting an external archive), but cannot normally cover equipment. Project are expected to last 6-8 weeks.
Deadline: 5th April 2010.
